The Mid-Atlantic United States is home to some of the largest cities in the United States, some of the best attractions, colonial history, and hundreds of miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Read below to learn more about this area of the United States.

Places to Visit and Things to Do:

  • New York: Well-known for the world-famous attractions in New York City, such as the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Central Park, and Brooklyn Bridge, New York State also has plenty of other reasons to visit, such as Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, the Adirondack Mountains, and Long Island

  • Pennsylvania: Philadelphia is known for the Liberty Bell, the Rocky steps, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Philly cheesesteaks, while Pittsburgh is known for the Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and Primanti Bros sandwiches. Elsewhere in the state are attractions such as Hershey Park and Gettysburg National Military Park

  • New Jersey: Popular attractions in New Jersey include the casinos at Atlantic City, Six Flags Great Adventure, which is one of the world’s largest theme parks, and Liberty State Park, which has great views of the Statue of Liberty and the New York City skyline

  • Maryland: Home to Fort McHenry National Monument and National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland is also home to the Chesapeake Bay, Ocean City Boardwalk, and the US Naval Academy

  • Delaware: One of several states with tax-free shopping, Delaware is home to plenty of activities at Rehoboth Beach, The Air Mobility Command Museum, and Nemours Mansion and Gardens

  • Washington DC: The capital of the United States is well-known for being the home to the White House, Capitol Building, and Washington Monument. In addition, Washington DC is home to plenty of other famous attractions, landmarks, and museums, such as the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Smithsonian Natural National Museum of Natural History, and Smithsonian's National Zoo. One of the great things about Washington DC is that many of the popular attractions are free to visit. Visiting in late March or early April is a great time to visit due to the blooming cherry blossoms

  • West Virginia: Home to New River Gorge National Park, Blackwater Falls State Park, and whitewater rafting, West Virginia has many outdoor attractions. The town of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is a popular tourist attraction. In addition, Snowshoe Mountain Resort is the biggest ski resort in the Mid-Atlantic region

  • Virginia: Known for several popular attractions near Washington DC, such as the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum - Udvar-Hazy Center, Virginia has many other attractions thorughout the state. Shenandoah National Park, George Washington's Mount Vernon, Virginia Beach, and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello are also great places to visit in Virginia

Travel Tips:

  • With plenty of famous landmarks, museums, and attractions, many of which are free, a great transportation network, and close proximity to other large metropolitan areas, Washington DC is a great place to visit

  • Don’t try to see it all. You can spend weeks in New York City and Washington DC and not be able to see everything the cities have to offer. Instead, focus on a few activities and attractions and spend more time there

  • The Mid-Atlantic United States experiences warm summers, along with cold winters. Depending on the activities or experiences you are looking for, plan accordingly
