The Northeast United States is known for regional food such as lobster rolls and clam chowder, colonial history, mountains, and hundreds of miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Read below to learn more about this area of the United States.

Places to Visit and Things to Do:

  • Connecticut: Home to the casinos such as the Mohegan Sun, Connecticut is only a few hours away from large cities such as New York City and Boston. In addition, even though most people think of New York style or Chicago deep dish pizza, New Haven coal fired pizza is recognized as some of best pizza in the United States

  • Rhode Island: The smallest state in the United States, Rhode Island is home to mansions such as The Breakers and The Elms in Newport, beaches along the Long Island Sound, and the Water Place Park in downtown Providence

  • Massachusetts: Along with many tourist attractions in the city of Boston, Massachusetts is home to seaside destinations such as Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Cape Cod. Massachusetts is also home to the Salem Witch Trials Memorial and Plimoth Plantation

  • Vermont: Vermont is known for Lake Champlain, which attracts visitors for its fishing, boating, kayaking, and wildlife. Elsewhere throughout the state, you can take a tour of Ben and Jerry’s, hike in the Green Mountain National Forest, and ski at Killington Resort

  • New Hampshire: The Granite State is home to several great outdoor attractions, including Mt Washington, Flume Gorge, Lake Winnipesaukee, and Mt Monadnock, which is the United States’ most climbed mountain

  • Maine: Along with Acadia National Park, Maine is also home to the Old Port and Portland Head Lighthouse in the city of Portland, an abudnacne of lighthouses, and the Maine Maritime Museum. Whale watching, boating, and sailing are popular activities in Maine. Additionally, Maine is well known for their lobster rolls

Travel Tips:

  • Rhode Island and Connecticut are able to be seen via day trips from New York and Massachusetts. Providence, Rhode Island is only 50 miles away from Boston, while New Haven, Connecticut is only 80 miles away from New York City

  • The Amtrak Acela Express is a high speed rail line that connects the Northeast cities of Boston, Providence, New London, New Haven, and Stamford, and continues through larger cities all the way until Washington DC. This is a great way to explore the Northeast without having to rent a car

  • If you’re looking to see the leaves changing colors, fall is a great time to visit, especially in September or early October
