The Southeast United States is home to several large cities, plenty of history, and thousands of miles of coastline along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. The region is known for fishing, beaches, and great food. Read below to learn more about this area of the United States.

Places to Visit and Things to Do:

  • Arkansas: The Natural State is home to attractions such as Hot Springs National Park, William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum, and Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, and the Ozarks National Forest

  • Louisiana: New Orleans is famous for the French Quarter, Mardi Gras, and Cafe Du Monde. Other attractions throughout the state include boat tours through the bayous and swamps, Oak Valley Plantation, and the Louisiana State Capitol, the tallest Capitol building in the country, even bigger than the Capitol in Washington DC

  • Tennessee: Tennessee is home to a plethora of activities for tourists, such as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Graceland and the Elvis Presley Memphis Complex, and Dollywood in Pigeon Forge. The state is known for country music in Nashville, and blues music in Memphis

  • Mississippi: Home to the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum, Vicksburg National Military Park, and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. The Gulf Coast of Mississippi is famous for their casinos, fishing charters, and Gulf Islands National Seashore

  • Alabama: Alabama is known for the Rosa Parks Library and Museum, U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, and the Florabama bar on the Gulf Coast on the border with Florida. The state is also home to their passionate sports fans at events such as University of Alabama Crimson Tide football games and NASCAR races at Talladega Superspeedway

  • Georgia: The Peach State is home to two popular cities - Atlanta and Savannah. Atlanta is known attractions such as the Coca Cola Museum, the College Football Hall of Fame, and the Georgia Aquarium, one of the best in the world. Savannah is known for the filming location of Forrest Gump, the historic district, ghost tours, and Tybee Island. Georgia also has Providence Canyon State Park, which resembles Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah

  • Florida: With Disney World, Universal Studios, and 1,350 miles of coastline, the Sunshine State is one of the most visited states in the country. South Florida is also home to 3 national parks - Everglades, Biscayne, and Dry Tortugas, along with the popular city of Miami, and the Florida Keys. Florida is home to several large cruise ship ports, with many cruiselines traveling to the Caribbean. Florida is also home to Kennedy Space Center, where frequent NASA and SpaceX launches occur. St Augustine is the oldest city in the United States, and is home to Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. The state is also home to many professional sports teams, and hosts annual sporting events, such as the Daytona 500. Florida has many food festivals, such as the Florida Strawberry Festival, Key West Lobsterfest, International Cuban Sandwich Festival, and the The Key Lime Festival

  • South Carolina: The Palmetto State has some of its best attractions on the Atlantic coastline, such as Charleston's Historic District, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head Island, and Fort Sumter. Further inland, Congaree National Park and the city of Greenville are great places to visit

  • North Carolina: Home to the popular Great Smoky Mountain National Park, North Carolina is known for the The Biltmore Estate in Asheville and the Outer Banks on the Atlantic Ocean. North Carolina is also known for having some of the best BBQ in the country

Travel Tips:

  • Visit more than just Disney or Universal while in Florida. With plenty of beaches, 3 national parks, over 1,000 golf courses, Kennedy Space Center, and more, there’s plenty to do besides just theme parks

  • People in the Southeast are known for their friendliness and hospitality, and will gladly answer any questions

  • If you visit during the fall, try attending an SEC football game. Stadiums of 100,000 passionate, screaming fans is a great experience if you’ve never been before

  • The southeast United States is really crowded, hot, and humid in the summertime. Furthermore, some states such as Florida receives most of its rain during the summer months. Traveling in other times of the year will likely be more comfortable in addition to being less crowded
